![]() ![]() Meanwhile, as many as 66 per cent now feel that the party is “divided”, up from 44 per cent just nine months ago. According to Ipsos MORI the proportion who think that the party is “fit to govern” has fallen from 34 per cent last autumn to 21 per cent now. However, the broader image of the Conservative party has suffered in recent months too. While that was six points down on what the party achieved in December 2019, it was still enough to put it four points ahead of Labour. Shortly before the Owen Paterson affair broke, the party stood on average in the polls at 39 per cent. Meanwhile, the manner of Mr Johnson’s departure may not make the task of renewal any easier. The party’s popularity and image have suffered badly since the question of Boris Johnson’s probity and judgement first became the subject of political controversy during the Owen Paterson affair last November. The electoral challenge facing the next Conservative leader will be a substantial one.
